This guide addresses common questions regarding the hosting of a Lu‘uLive Ocean Camera. Our goal is to support marine science and ocean safety while maintaining a zero-impact presence on your property.

Lu‘uLive is an ocean forecasting platform dedicated to connecting the world with our coastal ecosystems. Our mission is to bridge the gap between ocean enthusiasts and marine science.
By live-streaming ocean views and developing advanced predictive algorithms for underwater visibility, we aim to enhance ocean safety for the diving community while providing critical data to researchers studying reef health, water quality, and marine populations.
Unique in our approach, Lu‘uLive operates a sustainable model where commercial revenue is directly reinvested to subsidize marine research grants, ensuring that our technology serves both the community and the planet.
I. Our Mission & Your Impact
Q: What exactly is this camera used for?
A: Beyond providing a live view for the community, Lu‘uLive is an ocean forecasting platform. We are developing a first-of-its-kind algorithm to predict underwater visibility. This data helps divers stay safe and also provides critical insights into water quality, reef ecology, and fish populations for the research community.
Q: How does this support marine research?
A: Lu‘uLive will use commercial revenue to subsidize our marine research activities such as developing an underwater visibility algorithm and deploying underwater cameras. These capabilities support:
- Population studies of local fish.
- Long-term monitoring of reef health.
- Improved understanding of water quality for public health.
II. Ocean Safety & Community Value
Q: Will this bring more tourists and crowds to the area?
A: We do not expect a noticeable change in visitation. Unlike surfing platforms that cater to a massive audience, our primary users are the diving community, a smaller and more specialized group.
Q: How does this help the community?
A: It is a major asset for ocean safety. By viewing the feed, divers can infer conditions and water clarity before they leave home, preventing unnecessary trips and helping ensure they only enter the water when it is safe to do so.
III. Installation & Zero-Impact Hosting
Mounting Details: We prioritize a non-invasive installation. We propose mounting the small, weatherproof camera to a vantage point at least 10 feet from the ground. Example mounting surfaces include:
- Under a roof.
- To a balcony railing.
- On a tree trunk.
Three 1-inch screws are typically enough to mount the camera. Hose clamps or pole clamps are also options. The unit is compact, silent, and has no lights or moving parts.
Wiring: Any necessary wiring is fastened securely to the tree or structure to ensure a low-profile, neat appearance. We typically plug into a standard external power outlet.
Off-Grid Options: While power and data consumption are negligible, we can provide a 100% self-contained system. This includes a small solar panel for power and an independent cellular router for data, removing any reliance on your home's utilities.
Maintenance: We perform a quick lens cleaning roughly every two weeks to keep the feed clear of salt spray. This can be done by the Lu‘uLive team or anyone you designate.
Lu‘uLive assumes all responsibility for equipment.
IV. Host Control & Privacy
Q: Can I turn the camera off?
A: Absolutely. Your privacy is our priority. You can pause the stream whenever needed, and you retain the right to cancel the program permanently at any time.
Q: Does the camera record my backyard?
A: No. The camera is fixed and ocean-facing. The video frame is configured to exclude private property, ensuring only the horizon and water are visible.
V. Compensation
We offer a monthly hosting stipend from $10 to $60 as a thank-you for your partnership.
- $60 (Higher Tier): For setups that use your existing home power and internet connection.
- $10 (Lower Tier): For off-grid setups where Lu‘uLive provides solar power and independent cellular data.
Lu‘uLive covers 100% of installation, maintenance, and equipment costs.
